As CiC launches the next round of its CiC-Start mentoring scheme, we wanted to reflect on our experience as part of first round of the scheme. We were matched due to a mutual former employer in the planning/ property sector and, although Oli has since moved into a more general PA role, this shared experience ensured there was plenty to talk about during our first session.

We quickly focused on goals for our mentoring relationship. We settled on ‘Project Promotion’, with Oli keen to progress from Senior Account Manager to Account Director. Our discussion focused on everything from how to add value to existing accounts, to being able to better support the senior team and, ultimately, help drive new business. Tom was able to draw on his own experience, both as a consultant and now as a Director, to advise Oli on the challenges and opportunities around stepping up to Account Director level.

With key reviews on the horizon, we set out how best to prepare for this milestone and identify goals for the year ahead. This proved successful, with a clear pathway from Senior Account Manager to Account Director agreed at the review. Despite a challenging start to the New Year following a Covid diagnosis, Oli continued to work toward his goals and made real progress by expanding the scope of work with an existing client, broadening his client base and getting involved in drafting new business proposals. Although the mentoring scheme officially ended in the Spring of 2021, we continued to speak every few months to discuss Oli’s progress as he worked towards his goals.

Twelve months on from first being matched together, we finally had the chance to meet in person at Party Conference in Manchester. And there was cause for celebration, with Oli on the cup of being promoted to Account Director – an announcement which was confirmed following his most recent review. 

We both signed up for the programme not knowing quite what to expect from it. However, Oli’s promotion and an enduring friendship are testament to the benefits of this programme and we would like to thank Alec, Adam and the wider CiC team for their work in setting it up.

We wish the Class of 2021-22 the best of luck as they embark on their journey!
